TWIN PATRELS CRAFT SELTZER
TWIN PATRELS CRAFT SELTZER

One of Buffalo's newest and best places to have a drink, Twin Petrels Seltzer Co., is also home to my latest experiment in stop-motion work.
My subject was Katrina Piechowicz, the owner of Twin Petrels. The team at the seltzery are unique in that they brew their own craft seltzer from scratch, which results in a final product that is absent of the harsh bite and artificial flavors of many canned fizzy drinks. Most producers of hard seltzer are just adding flavoring agents to grain alcohol — Twin Patrels's seltzer is fruit and botanic forward and kind of tastes like a trip to an outstanding farmers market. I started to visit Twin Petrels just after the new year, and it has quickly become one of my favorite places to grab a drink and a bite to eat.

In addition to their delicious seltzer, Twin Petrels also has a stunning interior. The space is bright, open, and airy, with huge glass garage doors that let in plenty of sunlight.
I wanted to create portraits of Katrina that captured her spirit and her love for craft seltzer, and the fantastic space allowed us to do that very quickly and efficiently. So, with the time we had left, I decided to add a stop-motion portrait to our shot list that day. I've been having a ton of fun creating these lately - they are a perfect supplement to still images online.

As I worked, I was struck by Katrina's warmth and charisma. She was so open and generous with her time, and she shared her story with me with enthusiasm and passion. I'm so pleased with the final result. It celebrates her creativity and the incredible space she has created.

Link Love
Here is a quick rundown of what I've been consuming/loving/interested in recently and why.
Tactile Turn Nitro
You all know I have a soft spot for fountain pens, but when I'm in the studio or out of location, I like to carry something a little more rugged — so I am obsessed with the machined pens from Tactile Turn. I have collected a few of these over the years, with my orange and blue cerakote-painted GT and solid copper bolt action being favorites. Even though I don't drink coffee anymore (long story), I really love the colors of their new caffeine-themed seasonal release — The Nitro. I might need to add this one to my bag
Digital Folklore
I've been binging this narrative podcast that tackles myths, memes, and folklore in the digital age with a really unique style. This is so different from your typical boring mono-topic podcast. Perry Carpenter and Mason Amadeus have created a wonderfully satisfying and immersive way of deep-diving into a niche topic.
The Decagon House Murders
With my Erin away in Japan for a few weeks, I've been making it a point to read more Japanese authors lately. The Decagon House Murders by Yukito Ayatsuji has been scratching all of my Agatha Christie whodunnit itches. I love a good mystery that can pull me away from my steady diet of horror and sci-fi novels.
