This summer, I embarked on a short journey to Batavia, New York, to create portraits of Ricky Palermo. At the age of 21, a spinal cord injury left Ricky paralyzed, but his spirit remained unbroken. This photoshoot provided a brief glimpse into the life of a man who has defied the odds.
I photographed Ricky in and around his home, where his family — a pillar of strength for him — was preparing for the upcoming annual Ricky Palermo Foundation Charity Golf Tournament. However, the most endearing images of him were taken on the street in front of his house.
Ricky's journey with the University of Miami (UM) began in 1986, just a few years after his injury. Recognizing his potential to contribute to their research, UM invited him to participate in an early study. This groundbreaking research led to the development of functional electrical stimulation (FES) bicycles. This technology uses electrical currents to stimulate muscles, allowing them to contract and produce movement. Ricky's association with the Miami Project to Cure Paralysis has been transformative, contributing to pioneering research that is reshaping lives—FES bikes are now widely used in rehabilitation centers worldwide.
The Miami Project has become more than just a research institution to Ricky; it is a family. The project and Ricky's dedication to finding a cure for spinal injuries have inspired many, fueling their determination to keep fighting.
